Frequently Asked Questions

What race do you train for?

In previous years we have trained for the Danskin Women's Triathlon in Austin, but in 2009 we have made the switch to train for the Trek Women's Triathlon. We believe that this new race series is a wonderful event for local women and are excited to be a part of its inaugural season. For women wanting to participate in the Danskin race, we will offer support to continue after the Trek race through to the Danskin race.

Trek

Is race registration included in my training program fee?

No. You will need to register for the race directly through the Trek Women's Triathon website.

Where are the workouts?

The workouts are located in different areas in your city, depending on the nature of the workout.  Our coaches choose venues appropriate for each workout.  Some workouts are on the actual race site (where possible).

Will we be swimming in open water?

Yes.  Each team is designed to incorporate an open water swim.  We will teach you the skills needed to swim and race in open water.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes.  Our training will provide instruction on swim form and technique to help you improve the swim skills you already have.  For safety purposes, you do need to be able to have a basic ability to swim.

What if I can’t make all of the workouts?

Of course we would like you to attend all of the workouts.  They are fun and the better attendance we have, the more camaraderie we build.  The first session is one of the most important workouts. We will have a 2-hour session together discussing training principles and heart zone training.  It is not mandatory to make each workout.  The program is, however, a flat fee, and is not prorated for the number of workouts you attend.

Do I have to have triathlon experience to join Women's Tri Training?

Not at all.  Our Level 1 training program is designed for the novice triathlete with some or no racing experience. We focus on swim, bike, run and triathlon skill building in a fun and safe environment. There is a Level 2 option for more experienced triathletes.

What are the workouts like?

Our training will expose you to a structured training plan.  Our workouts will begin with some lecture on either swimming, biking or running technique.  The next portion of the workout we will implement these new skills.  We lead you through swimming form and swimming intervals in a pool.  We’ll teach you bike handling skills and take you on an endurance bike ride.  We’ll show you proper running form and strengthen your running skills by working out on the track, running hill repeats and running slow, easy endurance run/walks.  We pull everything together with a practice session on efficient transitions (changing from swimming to biking and biking to running) and “brick” workouts.  Brick workouts are performing back to back sports, e.g., biking followed by running.  Finally, to bring all your skills together, we’ll have a mini-triathlon to help build confidence for race day.

What equipment do I need to join Women's Tri Training?

You will need swim equipment, swim suit, cap, goggles.  You will need bike equipment, bike, helmet, bike clothing.  You will also need running clothes and shoes.  Your coaches may have information on discount relationships we have with some retail partners.

Swimsuit

  • For swimming, your swimsuit should be one in which you can comfortably swim laps.

Goggles

  • Goggles are necessary to protect your eyes from chlorine and to help you see well under water.  Different brands of goggles fit differently so try them out before you purchase them: press the goggles against your face, without putting the elastic band around your head.  If the goggles fit well, they will stay on your face without the elastic.  Keep your receipt – most major retailers will allow you to exchange goggles if they leak or don’t fit right.

Bike

  • For cycling, it doesn’t matter whether you have a mountain bike, hybrid, or road bike. Wondering what kind of bike to get?  It is extremely important that your bike fits you well – the height of your seat post, the position of your saddle, and the location of your handlebars, among other things.  If your bike doesn’t fit you well, it will be uncomfortable, you will not get the power you need to ride efficiently, and you risk injury as you increase your training mileage.

Helmet (required!)

  • A helmet is required and it is extremely important that it fit you properly.  A poorly-fitting helmet is almost as dangerous as no helmet at all

Water bottle

  • Bring a water bottle with you to all of our workouts.  It is important to stay hydrated during training.  You should have a cage on your bike so you can keep your bottle with you during bike rides.

Running shoes

  • Whether you are running or walking, it is important to have running shoes that give you the proper support.  Shoes that are too old or shoes that don’t provide the right support for your needs will end up causing discomfort and injury.  Everyone’s biomechanics are different, and you should purchase your running shoes from a running specialty store. There, the experts will measure your feet, watch you walk and run, and select the right shoe for your running needs.

Comfortable sports bra

  • For your training, you’ll need a sports bra that provides good support, doesn’t pinch or bind, wicks moisture away from your skin, and is comfortable.  Avoid sports bras that are made with a cotton blend – look for all moisture-wicking fabric.  Try on several different styles, and then jump up and down, jog in place, and swing your arms forward, backward, and all around.  The internet has some articles about how to find a good sports bra.

Do I need to train before starting with Women's Tri Training?

The more time you have to train before the program starts, the fitter you’ll be for the race.  However, our training is an 8 week program that will prepare you for the race.  If you are consistent with your training and follow our training plan, you’ll be ready for race day!

Will I be the oldest, youngest, or slowest participant?

We have been training local women from a variety of ages and a variety of abilities for the past five years.  The workouts are split into smaller groups, placing women of similar abilities together.  It is a supportive, nonjudgmental atmosphere intended to encourage everyone!

What is Heart Zone Training?

Heart Zone training is a physical, mental and emotional fitness system, which maximizes your training, minimizes your time and results in measurable cardiovascular health benefits.  Heart Zone training is an individualized and personalized program.  With the use of a heart rate monitor, it is easier to manage and measure your fitness performance.  Our coaches are certified in Heart Zone Training and ready to teach you the basics to Heart Zone training.

Is a heart rate monitor included in my registration fee?

Our training will provide you with a trial use of a heart rate monitor for the first two weeks of the program.  After the initial two weeks we strongly encourage you to either buy or borrow a heart rate monitor for the remainder of the program.  This is not mandatory, but we believe that Heart Zone Training will greatly change the way you train.  We believe it is a tool you will want to hang on to for the rest of your life.

What is Level 2 Training?

In response to previous years' participants, we’ve developed a Level II program in select cities.  Women's Tri Training Level II is a coached training program for women who want to learn more about training for triathlons.  If you can answer yes to several of these questions then sign up for Level II:

  • Have you finished at least one sprint distance triathlon?
  • Have you been through the Team Danskin Training level I program?
  • Do you train on a road bike?
  • Do you plan on running the run course in the race?
  • Do you have a goal to go faster or further?
  • Do you have relative confidence in your swim skills?
  • Are you training approximately three times per week?

I'm not athletic and have never done anything like this before - where do I start?

Congratulations - you want to do a triathlon so you are already well on your way to the finish line!  One option is for you to join a local training program, like Women's Tri Training, where you can meet other women like yourself, get a training schedule, and tips and support from coaches.

I know I can do the distance, but I'm not very good at (choose one) swimming/biking/running.  Can I do the Trek race?

Absolutely!  The Trek Women's Triathlon is for any woman willing to develop the skills required to complete a triathlon.  During the swim, we encourage all of you to be able to swim the entire distance without the use of swim aids.  Should you run into any difficulties, however, there will be swim support and kayaks and canoes to provide assistance if you need help.  During the bike ride, there will be volunteer bike rovers to help fix a flat tire, right a chain, or help with other minor mechanical problems.  Likewise, many participants walk the "run" portion of the race - that's OK!

How do I know what to do on race weekend?

Our training will cover all aspects of the event ahead of time.  You'll know what to expect and how to prepare for it.  You'll even practice a couple mini-triathlons where you'll get to work out the kinks and get comfortable with the lay of the land.  Your coaches are there to answer all of your questions.

What if I come in last?

Well, you won't. It is guaranteed.  The Trek series spokeswoman, Sally Edwards, brings the race home by finishing with everyone who wants to stay out on the course a little longer.  Besides this is one "race" that is definitely not about being the fastest.  It is about being the best you can be and enjoying the experience.  The Trek Women's Triathlon has positive energy just oozing from it.  The Trek is about growth and empowerment.  At Trek Women's Triathlons finishing is winning!

How can I help?

Everyone can volunteer to help with the events.  The Trek Triathlon needs help with a variety of projects before, during, and after each race.
